We had heard rumours of Johnny’s morning routine being pretty wild, so we dug a little deeper to discover exactly what he gets up to in the mornings, but more importantly why he prioritises this routine.

Johnny, give us a detailed run down of your morning routine.

So, my morning routine involves waking up at 3:45am, hydrating with some water, and heading to the kitchen for my overnight oats. I do tend to wake up a bit too early because, as some of you may know, I eat really slowly. I think it’s a habit from when I was younger and had a scary choking incident. But don’t worry, I’m working on it!

After taking 15-20 minutes to enjoy my breakfast, I clean up my bowl and prepare the morning oats for the next day. I also take care of any leftover dishes from the previous night. I’m a bit of a clean freak, so I like to have everything tidy before I head out for work. I even manage to put a load of laundry on and hang it out to dry before leaving, so it’s ready when I get back from work.

Around 4:15am – 4:20am, I spend about 15 minutes doing stretching and mobility work. Then, I get my gym bag ready, put on my gym clothes, brush my teeth, and pop in my contacts. By 4:45am, I’m off to the gym for a solid hour of workout.

Once I return home around 6am, I take a quick shower, get dressed, and enjoy about 10-15 minutes of phone time to relax. Then, at 6:30am I head to work.

Also, in the afternoons I liked to have a sauna and a cold shower as soon as I get home. It feels so good. When I have footy training my mornings look a little different.

That’s wild mate, why did you start doing this?

The main reason I do stretch and mobility work in the morning is because I have something called “Hip Dysplasia,” which is a hip socket that doesn’t fully cover the ball portion of the upper thighbone. So my hip used to get really sore, and I had trouble bending over and walking properly. I looked into it and started doing stretching, mobility, and strengthening exercises, and I haven’t stopped since. It’s made a big difference in helping my hip a lot.

I started doing this because I always felt sore, inflexible, stiff, and tired. So having a routine helped me wake up and got my brain working with a few morning chores. And that feeling of achievement just makes me feel good to start the morning.

It’s heaps inspiring hearing you research and find ways to better yourself, how does your morning routine impact your mood and general wellbeing?

Having a consistent morning routine has a positive impact on my mood and general wellbeing. It sets a positive tone for the day and helps me start off on the right foot. By following my routine, I feel more organised, productive, and in control of my day. I find that when I stick to my routine, I feel more energised, focused, and ready to take on whatever challenges come my way. It’s like giving myself a little boost of positivity and motivation to kickstart the day.

I used to just wake up and immediately grab my phone. It was hard to get up because I’d end up scrolling or falling back to sleep. Plus, I never used to stretch, so I was always feeling sore, tired, and half asleep. Now, as soon as my alarm goes off, I find it way easier to get up. I’m up and ready to go!

Having this routine has made me feel better about myself and my body feels more energetic throughout the day.
